Indian Hernia Society
Introduction
Groin hernia remains the most common general surgical disease and its repair continues to be the commonest surgical procedure performed by general surgeons across globe. In USA alone 700,000 groin hernia operations are performed each year. Repair of groin hernia is the first elective operation taught and performed by surgical trainee. Repair of ventral/incisional hernia is the second common operation after groin hernia amongst the list of various hernias. Herniology - " Science of hernia" includes progress in the approach to the diagnosis and treatment of groin and other hernias during the past four decades. This time frame includes many advances important to the improvement of our patient care for this very common entity. Four areas of especial interest include: 1. Importance of the posterior inguinal wall; 2. Fundamental changes in our use of prosthetic mesh, type and technique; 3. Individualization of hernia repair and 4. An appraisal of operative approaches and techniques extant at the beginning of the third millennium. The challenge of teaching, training and research in herniology became more acute with advent of newer laparoscopic techniques of hernia repair. Laparoscopic hernia repair has been termed advance laparoscopic procedure contrary to open mesh repair. Research and training in hernilogy has been deficient in India despite hernia surgery being the most common operation.
The primary objective of Indian Hernia Society has been to further the learning of art and science of hernia surgery for surgical trainees and practicing surgeons. Towards achieving this goal; the first dedicated Hernia workshop was organized at AIIMS in 2003 and formation of Indian Hernia Society was announced. The Inaugural Conference of the Indian Hernia Society was held at AIIMS from 10-12 March 2006 and was a grand success. At present Indian Hernia Society has grown to a family of 300 surgeons from India and abroad.
